GOS 2017 FAQ for Artists

What is Gowanus Open Studios?
Gowanus Open Studios, or GOS, is an annual weekend event that takes place in October. Artists in the Gowanus neighborhood (and slightly beyond) open their studio doors and welcome the public to view art, meet the artists, learn about the process of art-making, and get a glimpse of the life of visual artists. This year’s GOS 2017 is the weekend of October 21 - 22 and is organized by Arts Gowanus.

GOS is an amazing art exhibit and so much more. It is an important opportunity for the Gowanus community to rally around the artists and creativity and energy that makes this area so vibrant.

When is my studio open?
Artists commit to their studio being open from noon-6pm on both Saturday and Sunday of that weekend. Ideally you are in your studio and meeting the people who come through (so many opportunities for great conversations!), but if you can’t be there, please be sure someone else is manning the studio and keeping it open.

What about Friday?
Several events Kick-Off the weekend on Friday evening. Studios are not open to the public on Friday evening.

Who makes Gowanus Open Studios happen?
Gowanus Open Studios is a collaboration between Arts Gowanus (a non-profit organization working to support, promote, and advocate for artists and a sustainable arts community in Gowanus), the artists participating, and many, many amazing and creative volunteers. We hope you will find a way to participate!

What does Arts Gowanus provide (through many volunteer hours and your registration fee) - AKA: why do I have to pay to participate?

  • Printed guide, including a street map, to help visitors find studios
  • Postcards and posters for promotion
  • Additional publicity and visibility
  • Meet-ups and happy hours
  • Marketing workshops for artists

What is each artist’s responsibility?

  • Registration fee (see below)
  • Ensure your studio is open both Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 noon – 6:00 pm
  • Create and update page in Artist Directory
  • Publicity – sending GOS announcements to email list, social media, etc.
  • Volunteer as many hours as possible
  • Participate in the community gatherings as be a part of this amazing community of artists
  • Know your goals, keep your eyes on the goal, and enjoy the weekend!

What is the cost to register for artists?
$35 Early Registration (Month of July: July 1-July 31)
$55 Regular Registration (Month of August: August 1-September 10)
$55 Registration after September 10 includes listing online in the Directory of Artists and online Map, but your studio will not be able to be included in the printed GOS 2017 Guide and Map.

Why register early?
Registering early saves you money. It also gives you a longer timeframe to set your goals and make a plan for how to make the most of the weekend. Including participating in the Arts Gowanus sponsored workshops over the summer.

What if I share a studio space?
Every artist must register individually. Only artists who have registered will be listed on the printed and online maps.

What if I am part of an artist collective?
If you would like to register as a collective, only the name of the collective will be listed on the online and printed maps. If you would like each name listed, you need to each register as individual artists.

What is the Artist Directory?
The Artist Directory is the official online listing of all registered artists with images of work and location on the GOS 2017 map. It's located here:http://www.agdir.org/artistdirectory.php?event=1

How do I update my profile?
If you've already created a profile and want to update your images or other info, you can get to the portal here: http:/agdir.org/artist

Where is my password and user ID?
Upon creation of your profile, you should have received an email from admin@agdir.org - check your spam and junk folders.  Your user ID is your email address and a password was automatically assigned to you upon creation. If you still can't find it, hit the forgot password and an email will be automatically generated with that info.  Be sure to add admin@agdir.org to your contacts so you receive those emails.

I haven't created my profile yet, how do I do that?
If you have registered for GOS, send an email to Amy@ArtsGowanus.org and she'll help you out.

What if I don’t have a space but still want to participate?
It is the responsibility of each artist to find their own space, ideally, the studio where you work. If you are a Gowanus artist and are looking for a space, you may contact us at info@artsgowanus.org, let us know your connection to Gowanus and your situation. Although there is no guarantee that we will find you a space, we will try to connect you with people and places that might offer you a chance to exhibit your work. There are several very supportive businesses who would love to host artists during the weekend. Sometimes a particular studio building has available space.

How do I prepare for Open Studios?

  • Once you register, read the emails for artists from Arts Gowanus (if you have not yet registered, make sure you subscribe to the general Arts Gowanus Newsletter via the subscribe button at the top of this page)
  • Attend Arts Gowanus-sponsored Summer Marketing Workshops (TBA for 2017)
  • Reach out to your building captains to coordinate a building-wide presence
  • Attend GOS 2017 Happy Hours and Informational Meetings
  • Connect with fellow participating artists to share tips and ideas on how to set up your space

How do I get more involved?
There are lots of ways to help out with GOS 2017! Your participation is needed. Your skills are needed. We need volunteers for ongoing leadership roles and also for one-time commitments of several hours.  Like to send out emails? Know WordPress? MailChimp? Like to talk to businesses in the community? Good writer? Blogger? Arts Gowanus is looking for volunteers to fundraise, secure sponsorships, coordinate logistics, get the word out through press and marketing, and contribute to our blog and website content, among other roles. Can I pay by cash or check?
We prefer that you register online on our registration page, where you can pay by debit or credit card. This process makes data management easier on our end. If you have trouble registering, please get in touch with us at amy@artsgowanus.org. If you strongly prefer, checks can be mailed to Arts Gowanus, 540 President Street, Suite 2E, Brooklyn, NY 11215.
