The Fellowship Exhibition at The Affordable Art Fair
Arts Gowanus is thrilled to announce a new partnership with the organization’s longtime collaborators The Affordable Art Fair, who will host the culminating exhibitions of The Arts Gowanus Fellowship starting this September.
The Arts Gowanus Fellowship at Affordable Art Fair
Launched in 2025, The Arts Gowanus Fellowship Program is open to low-income and upwardly mobile artists and makers working in any medium and at all stages of their career. Fellows receive a studio for a year, material support, career development and mentorship. This Fellowship program is made possible in part by a Community Benefits Agreement that Arts Gowanus negotiated with 11 property developers ahead of the Gowanus rezoning, which provides nearly 30,000 square feet of subsidized artist studio space.
For this exhibition, Arts Gowanus is excited to showcase the work of the first two graduating Fellows alongside their artist-mentors: Fellow Shelby Jackson and mentor Sean Qualls (picturerd above), and Fellow Sashia Jiang and mentor Miguel Reyes (pictured right.)
“The fellowship has allowed me to push past the limitations I had put on myself or what I thought society expected. I was fortunate to be offered mentorship with Sean Qualls,” says Arts Gowanus Fellow Shelby Jackson, “Working with him has opened my eyes to look at my talent as more than just a hobby. He has been teaching me to lean into ‘the now’ while perfecting my craft with consistency and dedication.”
