Gotham Sidewalks presents: “Street / Art, Brooklyn" art walk through Gowanus
There's a diversity of high quality art in the streets that surround the infamous Gowanus Canal. This walk highlights intriguing art studios and spaces, placing them in context with their unique environment: a 150 year old industrial waterway inching towards cleanliness. Property developers are making moves following the opening of Whole Foods Market in the center of the neighborhood, and the legacy of the area shines through the muck in many forms (even cyanotype).
Public art offers insight into Brooklyn's history and creative class that is often overlooked. Art history, music, urban planning, and architecture are just a few topics in this urban industrial treasure hunt. City-sponsored art projects and programs also makes an appearence. So will the beginnings of a multi-million dollar arts center in an old "Batcave," grammer school street art, and old school graffiti. Artists and other community players join us to weigh in. No tour is ever the same. Each one is carefully curated, and spiced with insight direct from the community. Enjoy a new side of New York's creative culture from the comfort of this shabby-chic enclave.
Bring a bit of cash if you want to grab a bite or drinks at the cafe beforehand, or take advantage of the many shopping / food / drink treats in Gowanus after the tour.
